First Addis Ababa Cycle Caravan 2009
Nisir Courier Service organizes the 2009 Addis Ababa Cycle Caravan which will take place Sunday morning 27th December 2009 starting at 10am at MESKEL SQUARE in front of Tourist Office.
This will be the first Addis Ababa cycle caravan ever!
A cycle caravan is an event whereby large numbers of cyclists gather together to cycle around prominent areas of the city together. It is not race or sport and speed is not encouraged. All cyclists in Addis Ababa are welcome – young and old, men and women, able-bodied and disabled people and all types of cycles can take part including ordinary bicycles, three wheeled cycles and hand-cycles for people with disabilities. The caravan will start at 10 am, go along to Posta Bet and back through Churchill Road to the Stadium.
The theme of this Cycle Caravan is Climate Change. Climate change is happening worldwide and is caused by emissions gases into the atmosphere. The world’s leaders are meeting in Copenhagen, Denmark in December 2009 to discuss how to solve this problem. Cycling as a means of urban transport do not emit any carbon dioxide and so promoting cycling is part of the solution
to climate change.
In order to promote cycling, cyclists need safe and pleasant road conditions. Therefore Nisir is calling for paying more attention to cyclists, cars
should be prevented from using service roads for parking, skipping queues and speeding, laws against speeding and dangerous driving should be fully enforced. Nisir calls on political parties to include these important issues in their party manifestos for 2010.
Background to organization
Nisir Courier Service is a newly established cooperative to serve people of Addis Ababa. On bicycles 11 couriers deliver packages, documents, or other messenger services. They can also do small shopping, deliver newspapers, pay your bills, fines or deliver flower to your beloved ones. They can also bring your lunch. All this on environmental friendly bicycles. Nisir courier service emerged as a result of a project implemented by eFTe Warsaw Group (Polish NGO) and LIV-Ethiopia Association co-financed by the Polish Aid programme 2009 of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland.
